Bombsquad – Rise Of The Vandals

Rise of the vandals (Saturday 22nd June – 7th July 2024) – A history of York’s street art scene and beyond.

Rise of the vandals is the fourth project from Bombsquad – a York based non-profit art collective.  The theme of this exhibition will be an excavation of the largely unseen history of graffiti and street art in York from the 1980’s through to the present day. Drawing on the extensive archive of Keith Hopewell AKA Part2ism, from York which includes photography, video and press clippings. Alongside this we’ll explore elements of the wider UK graffiti and street art scene, with a selection of artists.

It will enable each of the contributing artists to showcase their talents in a central York location (2, Low Ousegate, YO1 9QU), using all and any aspects of the building. The aim is to cut through the pretensions of commercial galleries which cater for privilege and affluence to instead create something to enrich the city and connect its communities and support local charities.

Proceeds from Rise of the Vandals will be donated to SASH (preventing youth homelessness 16 – 25 years of age throughout the North). SASH Young People have also been invited to exhibit some of their artwork.
